When it’s grilling season, there is nothing I love more than a good burger! As someone who doesn’t love red meat, making alternatives is a fun hobby! These burgers are quick to make, full of flavorful herbs, and will satisfy any summer BBQ go-er!

These turkey burgers literally took less than 10 minutes to make! I am always in favor of an easy and flavorful recipe that doesn’t force me to buy too many ingredients or take too much time out of the day. I am such a creature of habit, so sheet pan dinners are a staple in my house, but with summer here, I’m craving all of the grilled goods!

When buying meat, I try to be conscious of sourcing and typically opt for organic. Bringing awareness to the sourcing of animal products is a great way to practice sustainability. And personally, I believe there is a major difference in the overall quality and health benefits of organic and grass-fed animals.  This is a great article from the Cleveland Clinic explaining organic and grass-fed meat.

Now back to the recipe!

You can’t have a burger without fries. Okay, you can, would you really want to? A burger and fries is a true classic, and if you are anything like me, you can’t have one without the other. Instead of always opting for the greasy goods from your favorite diner (which is always allowed!), I like to switch it up with my favorite alternatives at home. These Japanese Sweet Potato fries are so good, take no more than 20 minutes to roast, easy to throw in the air fryer, and is the perfect side for these homemade burgers!

This recipe yields 3 turkey burgers, which I grilled, but feel free to cook them on the stove or portion them into smaller turkey meatballs and bake to add on top of salads or enjoy any way you want!

If you are grilling these, I recommend adding a little (about ¼ to ½ a cup) of water and a dash of salt to the ground turkey mixture before portioning it. It allows the burgers to become a little stickier, retain shape, and adds a little juice for cooking.

For the turkey burgers:

1 lb organic ground turkey (Mine was 94% lean)

1 handful of kale, chopped

1-2 green onion stalks

¼ diced bell pepper (I used red for an extra pop of color)

½ oz cilantro, chopped

½ oz parsley, chopped

1 clove minced garlic or ½ tsp garlic powder

¼ lemon, juiced

Salt and pepper to liking

For the fries:

1 large Japanese sweet potato

1 tbs olive or avocado oil

1/2tsp garlic powder

Salt and pepper to your liking

  1. Preheat oven to 400F. While waiting for the oven to preheat, cut sweet potato into French-fry-like slices and add to a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Cover the potato slices with avocado oil and add garlic powder, salt and pepper. When preheated, roast the sweet potatoes for 20 minutes or until crispy on each side.

  2. In a mixing bowl, combine kale, green onion, bell pepper, cilantro, parsley, garlic and lemon with the ground turkey & mix together – I used my hands.

  3. When the sweet potatoes are halfway done, put the burgers on the grill. Cook about 10 minutes or until cooked through and enjoy!
